I was reading the paper and came across this interesting statement by Minsitry of Public Works “Kuwait streets can sustain 850 thousand cars while Kuwait has over 1.6 Million cars”, this explains everything about annoying traffic congestion.

Traffic department was worknig on temporary solutions like re-designing 5th ring road, currently the 1st ring road, and soon 4th ring road but is this ever enough? I found this video for a Kuwaiti guy explaining ideas on how to cope/enjoy congestion.

Yesterday I renewed my car registration and I found that I had one unpaid traffic ticket for over-speeding even though I can’t recall any camera flashes but I know some who pay as high as 300 KD for speed tickets. Today I wanted to shed some light on the types of speed cameras in Kuwait streets and explain how each type work.

Analogue cameras (See above): These are the older ones and are scattered around Kuwait streets, Traffic Department has recently fixed more of these cameras. This camera uses analogue photography, so the taken snapshots are stored on a film and a guy comes to collect the film and process the pictures (just like old cameras), many times these cameras produce unclear shots.

Digital Cameras: We can see them on Gulf road, these are digital ones, smaller in size, and are very precise. As I understood that these have processing unit fixed (See above) and digital shots are directly sent to Traffic department, the same type are used on many traffic lights, and they can also be used for surveillance.

Smart Cameras: These are smart ones, they don’t flash and we can see it on 1st ring road. They fix two cameras in two different locations on a street, 1st camera measures your first speed then the 2nd camera re-measures your speed again and then your average speed is calculated, if it exceeds the allowed speed then it will save your plate number. So slowing down when reaching the camera technique won’t work and traffic department is considering to use more of these cameras in soon future.

Smaller Cameras: They have been recently fixed on Kuwait highways, actually they’re not speed cameras, they are only flashes (See above) used to help the main camera get a clear snapshot (That’s what I understood) but take that with a grain of salt.

My car registration has expired for a week now and I was little lazy to renew it, a friend of mine told me about a new private company (aprroved by traffic department) that renews car registration in half an hour, so I decided to try them.

The company is called Al Daman Inspection and located in Shueikh and Fahaheel, I called them and asked a few questions, they said they charge 10 kd for inspecting the car and renew your registration and that customers can pay their traffic tickets at the same place. This is good since I had to go to Assima traffic department before to pay for my traffic tickets.

They said they also have VIP service where they send someone to pickup the car from the house, make the registration and bring it back for 25 KD. I liked the idea since it saves time and efforts, they open from Sunday through Thursday (8:00 am to 1:00 pm & 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm).

Address: Industrial Shuweikh – Behind the slaughterhouse

If there’s one really annoying U-Turn in Kuwait then it would be the one located at 3rd ring road opposite to plaza complex in Hawally, I’m pretty sure many of you have seen the chaos/mess in this U-Turn when many careless not caring in the world drivers cannot wait couple minutes for their turn and just go ahead and take the wrong turn, many accidents occurred and no action what so ever was taken.

Thanks [Wahab]

The traffic department has displayed this wrecked car on Gulf Street to be used as a dramatic ad for over-speeding and crazy driving in Kuwait, do you think this will help with accidents?

Frankly I think not because there’re already umpteen crashed cars that can be seen on Kuwait streets though its a good start.
