20130117_230344 (Large)According to our blog reader Sara, KDD products are back to all CO-operative Societies after weeks of boycott. Seemingly the Co-op union has formed a committee to negotiate with Kuwait Danish Diary Co. regarding their recent price increase and both parties were able to reach a mutual agreement. I can see from photos that KDD is marketing their products with “Prices are stable since 2008″ slogan. I’ve got to be honest with you, I’m a fan of KDD chocolate milk big time.

20121217_172657 (Large)From the heart of New York City (AKA The Big Apple) to the heart of Kuwait City flew Magnolia Bakery to open at Al Hamra Tower. I was lucky enough to be the first who checks it out before they officially open to the public to taste their cupcakes that I kept hearing about from friends and relatives.

Now correct if I’m wrong, Magnolia Bakery was opened in 1996 in Manhattan and have gained a big popularity and was featured on several TV shows such as Lazy Sunday, Saturday Night Live,  was also featured on Sex and the City series and the movie The Devil Wears Prada. So it basically have a great history in relatively short time, but question here, does it worth the hype? Well this is what I was trying to answer, at least partially.

20121217_172720 (Large)I arrived at Magnolia Bakery and it was just opening, they were not yet ready for the public but I made some calls to get access, the workers were so busy preparing cupcakes and sweets for the soft-launching event. First thing that I observed is that workers were manually making the swirls for the cupcakes without using any equipment, they said the staff had intensive training to master this skill, nice.

20121217_173507 (Large)The bakery was simply and cozily designed, being there somehow made me feel like I’m at home. They had a variety of cupcakes and sweets of all shapes and tastes, actually I read that Magnolia Bakery serves over 120 of baked goods such as pies, cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, muffins, crumb cakes for various occasions. I tasted some of their cupcakes but I personally liked the red velvet and the banana pudding. I asked if they have low calorie sweets but they were honest enough to tell me “No” but they said they use high quality ingredients that are all brought from the U.S and no preservative and all sweets are baked and served fresh.

20121217_173655 (Large)My last question was about prices, they said the small cupcakes are around KD6 and for normal cupcakes KD12 for the dozen. They are officially opening on the 19th (Wednesday), so you can pass by and share your impression with us.

Address: Al Hamra Tower, Level 1.

I was asked to try sweets and pastries from a new Kuwaiti concept small business called Yummy Treats, their shop is located in Salmiya at the corner of Baghdad street and Homoud Zaid Al Khaled street intersection. Their shop is so tiny and cute.

Inside I was welcomed by the owner and my first question to her was “What’s new about Yummy Treats since we have plenty of cupcake businesses in Kuwait?”, “Yes you are absolutely right, but our sweets and pastries are freshly made everyday, we never keep anything for tomorrow, I prepare everything myself with care and I buy every ingredient myself.” She smiled and replied.

I checked their menu and saw whoopie pies, cupcakes, tea cakes, coffee cakes, browies, cookies, and assorted cakes. I liked their cake presentations, so cute.

I tasted their cupcakes and cookies and liked their red velvet and carrot cupcakes. They sell the dozen cupcakes for KD4 and KD5 for the big cake. I find them great for birthdays, events, or family gatherings.

My friend has told me that confectionery and cafe Gelatissimo has just opened at Al Hamra Luxury Center in the food court next to Elevation Burger. I haven’t tried it before but I heard positive opinions about their Gelato ice cream, it does look tempting I’m going to try it next time I’m in Al Hamra Tower.

Their other branch is located at The Village in Abu Al Hassaniya.

Thanks [Abdullah]

Popcornopolis is now officially everywhere in Kuwait, today they opened their 7th branch in 360 Mall at the food court near the cinema, they released a new popcorn flavor called cupcake, I tasted it and like it. I wish Cinescape allows us to get our popcorn inside the cinema instead of the two only flavors (salt & caramel) that they have.

I’m telling you guys popcorn is the next big trend in Kuwait, so now Popcornopolis or Garret Popcorn?

Do  you think popcorn is the next trend in Kuwait just like frozen yogurt? Today while passing by Solo Pizza Napulttana I spotted another popcorn shop called Hunch Gourmet Popcorn. Currently we have Popcornopolis, Let’s Popcorn, Mates Popcorn and soon we will have Hunch Popcorn and Garrret Popcorn.

I’ll pay them a visit when it opens to try their popcorn.

I received a bag for Belgian chocolates called Dolcissimo to taste and give my impression, the packaging itself looked elegant and neat, I liked how they used real flowers alongside the chocolates.

The word “Dolcissimo” means very sweet in Italian, I was told their products were made using premium Belgian chocolates.

They have several shapes and flavors for their chocolates such as chocolate fondue, chocolate caramel, Dip & Sip, dark, white among several others. Post Iftar, I asked my friends and relatives to taste the chocolate and tell me what they think, 90% of them liked it. Personally, I liked their caramel stuffed chocolate coupled with Arabian coffee.

I find Dolcissimo great for receptions, gifts, or occasions. Their shop is located in Al Shaab area and they have a website for home-delivery with payment via K-Net.

One of my favorite cookies places in Kuwait, Mrs Fields, opened their main branch in Hawally inside Al Safat mall (I don’t know if I can call it a mall) which is located opposite to The Sultan Center.

Their 2nd branch is located in Salmiya, see here

I passed by the new Chocolate Bar branch that was opened today at Al Hamra mall for a quick lunch after work, this is their 5th branch in Kuwait and its nicely designed like the others. They also launched new chocolate plates along with the opening, there was an outside seating area in the center of the mall.

Chocolate Bar is one of the successful Kuwaiti-concept restaurants, I think they opened in Dubai? Am I right?

Would you eat cupcake for KD7,700? A friend of mine who is currently in Dubai told me that the world’s most expensive cupcake maker Bloomsbury’s has opened their store at ground floor in Dubai mall, they offer customers cupcakes that they call “The Golden Phoenix” that is served on 24 karat gold plates with price up to 100,000Dhs (about KD7,700), that’s jaw dropping!

I guess I have to spend my life saving to try one of these cupckaes.

Thanks [Dallal]
