I had an exclusive and exciting sneak peek tour in Grand Cinemas at Al Hamra Luxury Center, I know there are zillion questions in your head right now; how much the tickets? Will movies be released earlier? Censorship? How to book tickets? …etc. but hey I got you all the answers and beyond. As I told you in my previous post, it will launch on Eid Al Adha [link] and it will mark a new era for cinema in Kuwait. A quick summary; Grand Cinemas has over 100 theaters spread spread across 23 locations in the Middle East including Dubai, Beirut, Jordan, and now Kuwait.
Inside I met with their regional operation manager Mr. Rabi Hajj and got chance to ask him many questions, he was kind to take me on quick tour and explain the facilities and services. I have to say that I was pleased with what I saw, below is how our chit chat went on:
What is the total number of screens?
Grand Cinemas (AKA Grand Hamra) has 8 regular screens plus one Grand Class (VIP) screen which makes a total of 1,450 seats.
What are the seats type?
We provide comfortable seats from brand ‘Figueras’ and they are the most expensive in the business (above) for normal theaters, as for the VIP theater we have the luxurious leather ‘Lazyboy’ seats (below) that can be electrically adjusted and equipped with buzzer to allow customer to call the waited to order refreshments.
What will be the type of screens used? Is there IMAX 3D screen? and what is the sound system?
All of our screens are equipped with digital projectors from Barca, and we will also have a 4K projector which is the first in Kuwait. Our theaters are equipped with the latest sound technology for an exciting experience. In our original plans we planned to have IMAX 3D but due to the space restriction we were not able to have one.
What will be the ticket price?
For the normal screens it’s KD3.5 and KD10 for the VIP, the VIP customers will have a separate entrance and can wait in a luxury lounge (below) with TV till movie starts, also they will get free refreshments and food such as wine (non-alcoholic), caviar, and salmon.
How can people book the tickets?
We have installed E-Kiosks inside the cinema for booking, people can also book online on our website, and soon we will launch iPhone and Android apps.
What refreshments will you offer to customers?
We have concessions that provide tasty popcorn (both salty and caramel), nachos, hot dog, drinks, sodas, sweets. ..etc. and all of our foods will be from the U.S. There is also ‘Crostini’ cafe to serve salads and sandwiches.
What about movies release dates?
We will release the latest movies, plus there will be exclusive movies for Grand Hamra, James Bond Skyfall will be exclusive for us when it’s first released.
These were the questions that I asked, I gotta say that I was pleased with the beautiful decorations, large lobby, and nice rest rooms. Grand Hamra is set to open its doors in Eid Al Adha (26th October). Personally, I’m going to watch James Bond Skyfall when its first released.
I don’t get it.. I think they should low their prices to grab people’s attention.. Cinescape has more screens everywhere & it’s cheaper.
Ticket price for Digital movies in Cinescape is KD3.5, so it’s the same. It’s the VIP where the cost is different

بصراحة سؤال مهم جدا ولكن لم اتطرق اليه بالمقابلة السريعة ولكن حسب علمي ان جميع الافلام ستمر من خلال ادارة الرقابة في وزارة الاعلام قبل عرضها بالسينما سواء سينسكيب او غراند سينما, ولكن ان شاءالله سأحاول الاتصال بمدير السينما للتأكيد. وشكرا

Excuse me but I’m not paying to watch a porno. I can do that home or travel abroad and watch XXX movies if I wanted too. I am paying to watch a freak’n movie to be in its top quality. Nudity is not always shown and if it is it would be mostly in a random comedic situation or a fight scene that BARELY shows a full breast shot with nipples. If anything it’s just a cleavage, big whoopee (sarcasm). Oh, f you think a kiss should be censored, I say you have a problem and that you have not yet passed the age of adolescence to know how the human body works. Not to mention you’ll suck at teaching your your kids the morals they need to know between what’s right and wrong and to tell the difference between what’s real and fake in movies.
It’s not like the kiss scene is going to go on for hours to give you a hard on.
You want censorship, go to Hawally Blue Belt Co. and grab your censored movies for yourself. Don’t ruin our hard earned money the entertainment that we pay for.

I swear to god once we went to a movie in cinescape and it was supposed to be 1:40 but when we watched it, it finished after 1:15 hours because of the censoring they do..25 minutes of censoring !!!

Say no more man. I know what you mean. That’s why I prefer paying for Blue ray dvds or regular dvds when I order off Amazon. Kuwait theaters don’t deserve my money. If they can at LEAST be as decent as Dubai when they censor movies, then I wouldn’t mind paying for a ticket.

I hate censorship in Kuwait, I stopped going to movies in cinema for that,,,it’s not just kissing or sex scenes that they slash,,even violence! Sometimes some scenes are cut for no reason! Why can’t they apply rating system and save us the headache..

Yes Censorship in Kuwait are Crazy. I watched Harry Porter and this movie was also censored too. Actually Harry Porter movie is for Teen Age. And What is there in that movie for Censoring.

Censorship in Kuwait is as difficult to change as is climate change. I will be over the moon if the management at the Grand, unlike Cinescape, have enough sense to allow people to carry their own water and non alcoholic beverages into the space.
Good question missed to ask it, will confirm this from them & let you know.
I am just waiting for tomorrow for the launch.I have been eyeing this moment since a long time. Lets hope the website works on the first day and does not crash due to overload!! Hope and wish they do special film screenings; retrospectives on Fellini, Kurosawa, Bergmann, Satyajit Ray etc. Do they have special pricing for the weekends compared with the rest of the week? It’d be great if they have a slot assigned to classic B/W cinema and the best of international cinema showcasing the best of Japanese, Irani, Bengali, French and Spanish cinema, and with dual sub-titles in English and Arabic. Now wouldn’t that be something! Maybe they can rope in the Cine Club of Kuwait if it still exists to hold movie talks after the screening to discuss the art of film making and critique the film, in general. Will up the ante for the cine-goer’s company in Kuwait and beyond.
What I like best abt watching English movies on Indian channels such as Zee Cafe, Zee Studio is thanks to the Reliance group you now have English subtiitles for English movies so that you don’t miss a word of what’s being said; the dialect and accent regardless.
A Tribecca style film festival at the Grand would be a pipe dream but seems like an incredibly tough act for anyone to pull off! So will let that pass.

it was freeeeeeeeezing cold ! ilartheya ma 3laiha zaal! metna men ilbard ! ghaalya oo alot of things were not ready! i had a booking but they made me wait in the line for 30 mins then they asked for the people with bookings to move to another line! it was bad lilasaf ;/

I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE A NEW CINEMA COMPANY IN KUWAIT.
HOWEVER, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH GRAND CINEMA ALHAMRA.
- I ATTENDED 2 FILMS, NONE STARTED NORMALLY, THEY ALL HAD GLITCHES, AND WE HAD TO GO OUT AND CALL PEOPLE TO FIX IT.
- THERE IS NO TRASH BINS TO THROW YOUR RUBBISH AFTER YOUR DONE, AS IF THEY PROMOTE PEOPLE AND KIDS TO THROW RUBBISH ON THE FLOOR AND IN THEATERS, SUCH A BAD MENTALITY FOR OUR SOCIATY. IN DUBAI YOU CAN T THROW YOUR RUBBISH IN CINEMAS ANYMORE… BY LAW.
