I read this new report from Kuwait Environment Public Authority (K-EPA) that Kuwait consumes over 6.5 Billion plastic bags per year, that’s like 179,000 bag per day! I think the Co-op’s hold the major responsibility for the abuse of these plastic bags that can harm not only the environment but also our health, I wonder if there’s an alternative, maybe a bio-degradable bags or recycled ones? at least they must be environment friendly.

I recall when ever I’m in Europe, I rarely see super markets providing bags and they even charge for them, this encourages people to re-use them instead dumping them and use new ones everytime they go for grocery.

a decade ago in UK they started to charge for plastic bag to protect the environment. Now, it is the same case in all Europe and Canada.
co-ops use plastic bags excessively. sometimes put groceries in more bags than what is required.
In Kuwait if I shape small items, I deny plastic bags and put it in my bag. I do that in “Sable” all the time. I don’t see the benefit of putting a cake bag or whatever in a plastic bag. specially that people here in Kuwait are steps away from where they park their cars.

I agree most people park to close to the market or co-op, but people and workers got used to use unnecessarily many bags for every item, also I’m thinking why government is not going forward with the recycling concept, they could have contracts to provide bio-degradable bags that decompose without harming us or environment.

No one really bothers in Kuwait. There are environmental friendly bags in carrefour for 250 fils I guess. But it is just a show. I never saw anyone using those bags, nor they have motivated people to use them.

    • Tazmania says:

That’s a great idea but I suppose 350 fils for bag will make pople avoid getting them, though I don’t mind paying if the bags are durable enough to be used over and over.

Yeah well who’d like to spend a 2.5 KD extra on every ten environmental bags he gets from Carrefour!

There are solutions like re-using the bags for other purposes and I have seen a lot of people do that, people are aware but they haven’t been given any alternative and this is how the things have been forever so…

So let’s start… we critisize but we never do anything about it..

the simplest solution is bring your own bag for grocery.
in case i forgot to bring it with me, i try to squeeze all items in one plastic bag.

and btw, there are two companies that recycle plastic & other materials, they come to your home to pick up, I deal with one called: The Green Target Co: #94444927

they shoul ban supermarkets from giving out such bags like in France and let people shop with their own re usable ones .
