5thringroadI saw on the paper that Council of Ministers has agreed to re-name 5th Ring Road to Sheikh Zayed Road, this is indeed a great initiative from Kuwait to show little appreciation for late Sheikh Zayed and United Arab Emirates. Though I find it little hard to re-imagine the Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai as the congested 5th Ring Road, what do you say?

I received a video link from a blog reader saying that there was a small fire at the Avenues today, he says the fire started at Carrefour. I called someone from AlShaya and asked about it, I was told it was a small fire and resulted in slight damage for two stores and was controlled by firefighters though the root cause was not identified yet but there are speculations that it was due an electrical problem. If any of you has any more information regarding this or have photos please do share with us.

I believe time has come to take extra safety measures and inspect all firefighting systems in big malls.

MOILOGO2I have subscribed to a new SMS phone service launched by Ministry of Interior which will send me SMS alerts and reminders for several things such as traffic tickets, residence expiry, vehicle expiry, passport expiry, election registration among several other things that I listed below. The service fee is KD1 which is reasonable, if you would like to subscribe to the new SMS service visit this [link]

nanny121I’m pretty sure most of you have read or heard about this humane and touching story though I really wanted to share it with you. Apparently, a grown up Kuwaiti has decided to embark on a long journey to Sri Lanka in search for his old nanny that served at his house during his childhood for so many years and helped in raising him, and after a long adventure he was finally able to find her. I got to admit that reading this story and seeing the photos of the man happily hugging his nanny made me emotional, we can notice how the old nanny was actually happy.

This is the humane spirit that we need (or lack thereof) in treating our house maids. I read numerous horrific stories about maids being tortured and abused but hopefully this will change. Does anyone know what’s his name on twitter?

A fire has started at Shuaiba oil refinery a while ago and a blog reader has sent us this video, he says the smoke can be seen from all over Fahaheel Express way (Road 30) and Fahaheel. I called a friend who works at the refinery and he said the fire suddenly started at the crude oil unit at 1:00 pm exact and alarm siren was tripped and they did an immediate emergency evacuation. I know that Shuaiba refinery is the oldest one in Kuwait and probably in the world, it was built back in 1960′s and produces around 195,000 barrels per day, there were many plans before to shutdown the refinery but it’s still operating, but I think time has come for this refinery to shut down before any major accidents take place, hopefully everyone is safe.

Update: The fire was controlled 40 minutes after it was started and there are no reported deaths or injuries.

A friend forwarded this video for a man trying to commit suicide by jumping off from the window in Kuwait but I’m not sure where, they say he’s still alive. I’ve noted that suicidal rate in Kuwait has increased in recent years, this really makes me sad but also wonder why, could it be that life is getting more stressful than say a decade ago?

polce1234Did you guys read on the paper about Ministry of Interior (MOI) intention to set charges/fees for police stations? They say the charges will vary based on the service provided to speed up the process, oh yeah? I mean paying for reporting a theft or fire is kinda weird! Ok I understand in some cases like car accidents certain charges may apply. I guess if these charges are indeed applied then no one will ever want to report any crime. So are you with or aganist?

jabderstadium1I received semi-confirmed news that Brazil National Football team is coming to Kuwait for the official opening of Jaber Stadium to have a friendly game with Kuwait National Football team, marvelous. The Public Authority For Youth And Sport said they have chosen Brazilian National Team because they have good contact with it, but like I said this news isn’t 100% confirmed because I recall they said sometime back that they were trying to make a deal with European football team.

I guess we have to wait to see, fortunately the announced opening date of Jaber Stadium is on 17th February so that’s not long from now.

fraudscam1

I received a scam/fraud email from unknown sender claiming that they are from NBK online security, the email content as follows:

NBK

Dear Customer, As we are changing the way you login into your WOL, you are required to follow the steps that can be accessed below to enable us update your WATANI ONLINE information.

Secured: https://online.nbk.com.kw/WOLWebUI/2013eud.aspx

Thanks, Watani Oline Security

Then when users click the link provided it takes them to scam page that looks identical to NBK online page and asks them to enter their card number, WOL password, ATM card number, and ATM pin. I had my extreme doubts so I called NBK customer care to report it and they confirmed that this is a fraud/scam and said they will inform top management, so be aware and inform all your friends and relatives with NBK accounts.

nonexhcnageableI read on paper today that Chamber of Commerce has banned shops/outlets/stores from using “Non-refundable Non-exchangeable” policy starting this month, this is great for consumers because there were so many times when I had to argue with stubborn salesmen when I just want to have a refund even though I haven’t actually used the item I bought in any way. The new law allows any customer to refund his money in case he/she didn’t want the item, but of course there shouldn’t be misuse, but I guess most shops will now try to convince customers to go for exchange .

20130117_230344 (Large)According to our blog reader Sara, KDD products are back to all CO-operative Societies after weeks of boycott. Seemingly the Co-op union has formed a committee to negotiate with Kuwait Danish Diary Co. regarding their recent price increase and both parties were able to reach a mutual agreement. I can see from photos that KDD is marketing their products with “Prices are stable since 2008″ slogan. I’ve got to be honest with you, I’m a fan of KDD chocolate milk big time.
