I was checking my e-mail and came across this article from CNN, and thought it would be of great interest to you guys:

Bolivia was ranked the unfriendliest country for travelers in the World Economic Forum report. The category ‘Attitude of population toward foreign visitors’ is just one of many used to rank countries in the new Travel and Tourism Competitive Index. Bolivia ranked 110th out of 140 countries in the overall index results. On the positive side, it performed well in price competitiveness due mainly to low hotel accommodation costs.

(CNN) — When traveling, some countries just don’t like you. Or at least, it can certainly feel that way.

A new report, put out earlier this month by the World Economic Forum, has ranked which countries roll out the welcome mat to travelers and which give the cold shoulder.

The “Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013″ ranked 140 countries according to attractiveness and competitiveness in the travel and tourism industries.

Unwelcoming

Among the extensive analyses, one of the most interesting rankings was how welcome tourists are in each country, under the category “Attitude of population toward foreign visitors.”

And the world’s most unfriendly country, according to the data?

Bolivia took the dubious honor, scoring a 4.1 out of seven on a scale of “very unwelcome” (0) to “very welcome” (7).

Venezuela and the Russian Federation were next.

Interestingly, despite their huge tourist arrivals, South Korea and China tied with four other countries for the eighth least friendly spot.

At the other end of the scale, Iceland and New Zealand were ranked the world’s most welcoming nations for visitors.

You can see a top 10 for friendliest and unfriendliest at the bottom of this article.

Strengths and weaknesses

The “friendly” ranking was just one aspect of the report, analyzing each country’s competitiveness in travel and tourism. That competitiveness is “based on the extent to which they are putting in place the factors and policies to make it attractive to develop the travel and tourism sector.”

In the overall Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, Europe was the top region with the first five positions all held by European countries. Switzerland, Germany and Austria were the top three in that order. Switzerland has headed the ranking since the index began five years ago.

Excellent tourism infrastructure and facilities, business travel appeal, sustainable development of natural resources and rich cultural resources were among the key factors in landing the highest positions in the rankings.

Safety/security, underdeveloped infrastructure and concerns about sustainable development were among the factors bringing down countries’ competitiveness.

Haiti scored the lowest on the competitiveness index.

The United States (6th) topped the combined Americas, Singapore (10th) just pushed out Australia and New Zealand to lead the Asia Pacific region, the United Arab Emirates (28th) was the highest performer in the Middle East and the Seychelles (38th) overtook Mauritius to head Africa.

The report emphasized the need for continued development in the travel and tourism sector particularly for its role in job creation in a relatively stagnant global economy. The industry currently accounts for one in 11 jobs in the world.

The report used data compiled from the World Economic Forum’s Executive Opinion Survey and hard data from private sources and national and international agencies and organizations such as the ICAO, IATA, UNWTO, World Bank/International Finance Corporation, IUCN, WHO and UNESCO.

85th Academy Awards - Oscars Countdown 4Have you guys watched the 85th Oscar Academy Awards last night? I was so sleepy but I kept my eyes open till the show started and managed to watch half of it before I fall into a deep sleep, it was so fun but sadly I missed to see the winners and their reactions. I always get surprised with the winners but this time around I kind of expected the results. My favorite movie this year, Life of Pi, has won several awards such as best Director, best Cinematography, and best Visual Effects (well deserved) but the top movie award has gone to Argo (which I haven’t seen) starring Ben Affleck. It’s weird that I always miss to watch the films that win the Oscar awards!

VanityFairOscarParty2013COVERThe other surprise that the Italian-origin actor Daniel Day-Lewis has won the best actor award for the 3rd time for his role in Lincoln which I also missed, I think this is the first time ever an actor wins Oscar for three times, I remember he won the Oscar in Gangs of New York in year 2002, it was such an awesome movie. Also I think it was fair that Best Supporting Actor award has gone to cute Anne Hathaway (which is her first Oscar award) because she had to lose weight and cut her hair to fit the given role. As for the Best Actress award it has gone to Jennifer Lawrence for the film Silver Linings Playbook, yes I missed it as well.

As I expected James Bond Skyfall won nothing because it sucked if you ask me except for the intro song Skyfall that was performed amazingly by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth. By the way, did you see how Michelle Obama suddenly came in? It was kinda bizarre but indeed a smart diplomatic move. Academy awards aside, which actress do you think looked stunning on the red carpet this year?

I’m reading many articles and news on Google that there’s a growing world-wide panic that doomsday is on Friday 21st of December 2012, it seems they are basing this on the end of the Mayan civilization’s calendar. People in China and Russia are buying candles and essentials, while in the United States there is a surge in sales of survival shelters, seemingly doomsday panic is in full swing.

December 21, 2012, marks the conclusion of the 5,125-year “Long Count” Maya calendar, which many have interpreted as meaning that is the date that the Earth, and its inhabitants, will be annihilated. [link]

The thought of doomsday around the corner is undoubtedly fearful for those who believe in this Mayan theory but astronomers and scientists around the world are disagreeing with it. In Kuwait re-owned astronomer Dr. Saleh Al Ojairi reports there are no evidence what so ever to backup this theory and no extraterrestrial collisions or events were ever recorded or observed. Who knows? Maybe this is why UFO’s are invading Kuwait after all, giggles. So who wants to watch movie 2012?

My friend in Dubai told me that a heavy wave of fog has hit Dubai and covered all streets and high rise buildings, visibility was extremely low and drivers could barely see anything, I interrupted his conversation and asked if he can get me a video and luckily his answer was “Yes”. The time-lapse video that he sent me shows Dubai at sun rise, simply spectacular.

Thanks [Hasan]

I felt the need to share some great news that I received, Kuwait has made generous donation to the world famous museum in Paris, Louvre, to build Islamic wing within the museum. I read the wing holds the largest and finest Islamic arts gallery and artifacts that goes back to the 7th century, awesome.

The new Islamic department was opened last Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Hamad Al-Sabah was there to represent the Emir of Kuwait along with French president and Al Waleed Bin Talal, isn’t this exciting? I’m certainly going to visit the Louvre Museum next time I’m in Paris, the love city.
