It’s almost impossible these days that one single day passes without seeing at least one or two traffic accidents, actually seeing a horrific car accident everyday on my way to work/back home on King Fahad motorway has become very usual scene, sadly. Although I’m observing that regardless of the awareness campaigns the road accidents and violations are infact climbing up.

I saw this newly published traffic statistics for the duration January-June 2012 (that’s six months) and the figures are horrendous! Among the figures 44.6 thousand traffic accidents (that’s like 241 accidents per day), 227 got killed, 146 thousand broke red lights, 4.9 thousand got injured, 1.7 Million traffic tickets and the numbers keep flowing, I suspect the real numbers are much scarier.

Hate to be so negative, but what do you expect? No matter how many awareness campaigns are launched or rules amended, it’s almost as if drivers here TRY REALLY HARD to break the law. It’s almost too easy for everyone to swing into the emergency lane as soon as they see a traffic buildup and then quickly jump back into main traffic when a police car shows up [and guess what, no consequence], people speed like its the Grand Prix, drivers love to cut traffic lights or road turns, red lights mean nothing, turn signals don’t exist, cars fly between lanes at high speed and without indication and everyone drives offensively instead of defensively. On top of all that, you have the police who sit idly by the side of the highways talking to their coworkers or texting away on their phones without paying any attention to what’s going on around them. We then get officials from the Ministry of Interior on TV saying accidents are increasing and we should be more careful, but if you want results, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Implement harsh laws. Install cameras in the emergency lanes or have an increased police presence. Place barriers on road turns so people don’t cut in line. Have the police ACTUALLY DO THEIR JOBS.

I totally agree with everything you said but there are times where people just love to be anal. And it’s here in all honesty the police can’t do anything about it. I’ll give a simple example but with this same example it can be applied just about anywhere that you drive in.

Have you tried going in the main co-ops like Rawda or Mishrish in and out quickly from where you’ve parked your car in the parking lot area? You could say “barely” and for a good reason too because of how much traffic. Now in a co-op, there’s no traffic light, there’s only parking but for some strange reason there’s ALWAYS traffic or road blockage. Let’s look at what causes traffic.

The normal person when he wants to go to a co-op he would just park his car (doesn’t care how far the distance is) and would do his shopping. The anal person however would call his driver to stop at the main gate just so he can get his butt off the car and he would tell his driver to park on and wait in the car on the side of the road until his done from shopping. So what does this create? A chain reaction. The road gab for cars to pass by freely turned into a small gab because the driver parked in the middle of the road. A cop can’t cap his wheel or fine him because he’s in the car. The only thing a police can do is tell him to move out of the way. Anybody can do that without police aid. But by the time you tell him to move look at the mess that’s been created and the chain of traffic keeps going and going.

Now take this example and apply it everywhere that you go in Kuwait. People do stupid things that create a chain reaction for no reason which causes major traffic and car accidents. You got jail-walkers who don’t use the public stairs, you have people with cars that randomly breaks down and don’t have the common courtesy to move their car to the right side of the road to avoid creating traffic but instead leave their car sitting in the middle of the road WITHOUT turning on ER signal. You got people driving below the recommended road speed on road where you’re supposed to drive at that specific speed. You got people chasing girls and literally slowing down in the middle of the road thus creating traffic and sudden breaks. When there’s a car accident EVERYBODY stares. Nobody has the courtesy to move out of the way and let the police or medics through to aid the situation.

You might say that these are small things but I’ll tell you this, these small things are major cause to the traffic accidents that we have here. The list of this BS can go on and on. No matter how much camera or even if you brought in more police presence the situation will never change. And the main reason for is that nobody cares about the road rules and there’s no respect among each other.

I have to get out of my house early morning at 6:30 to reach my 8:00 class- just in case an accident happens and people have to stop and stare for at least 10 mintues… each!
I also agree with what Khaled and Darkwolf said.

  6. Hello says:

Strang to see such traffic accidents in Kuwait. In the past seldom we see traffic accidents in the streets of Kuwait. Statistics point out that speeding is the main reason of most of the Traffic accidents in GCC countries. When you want to speed just vision the consequncies of such an act, you might lose your life or body part which leaves you hadicaped. Imagine how you gona enjoy life with disapilities and depending mainly on others.Don’t ruin your life or others life by a traffic accident.
