What if I tell you that Internet service will be totally free of charge early next year, impossible right?
Well, I came to know about a global project called ELM Net launched by a Kuwaiti company Tawasul Services that will provide free DSL Internet service to Kuwait and other countries around the world for free.
I spoke with the Project team head, Mr. Tallal Al Yagout, and this is the interview:
What does ELM Net stand for?
ELM stands for Education, Literature, Media. Its a global project that will be launched from Kuwait to the rest of the world and aims of providing free Internet access to everyone.
How long have you been working on this project and what is the cost?
We have been working for over 4 years and the cost is over 4 Million Dinars.
How will you be able to cover the expenses?
We will pay the ISP companies through advertising that will be in the form of clickable banners.
So, how does it work?
Users will get a flash disk with the necessary software, all they should do is install the software on the computer and in 20 seconds, they will be able to choose the ISP they want and Internet will be accessible.
How will you Advertise?
When the program is launched, advertising banners will appear on the side of the screen.
Will we have a choice to choose the ISP for the DSL service?
Yes, when you launch the program you will be given the choice to select which ISP you want (Gulfnet, Qualitynet, KEMS, and Fasttelco).
What’s the Internet speed?
Don’t worry it will not be less than 500 Kb/sec.
What is the goal of ELM Net?
ELM Net will be like a tree that feeds the world with more education, culture, science, knowledge, media, and communication to the world.
When will it be launched?
Early 2012 Insha’allah.

مــا هو علــم نت ؟
علم نت هو مجموعة من البرامج تم العمل بها عن طريق فريق برمجه كامل مع الإستعانه بمستشارين عالميين من أجل الوصول إلى المنتج الأخير، والذي يتم عن طريقه توفير خدمة الإنترنت مجانا.
ماهى طريقة عمل علم نت ؟
يتم تحميل البرنامج عن طريق فلاش ميموري على الشاشة الرئيسية للكمبيوتر، وعند تشغيله يقوم بمحاكاة مشغلي الإنترنت (حسب إختيار العميل)، وتستغرق فترة المحاكاة تقريباً عشرون ثانية يبدأ بعدها ظهور (Banners) بانرات على يمين وشمال وأسفل الشاشة للكمبيوتر.
ماذا يستفيد العميل من هذه العملية (إستخدام علم نت) ؟
- لاتوجد تكاليف مادية على العميل من خلال إستخدام علم نت، حيث يتم دفع التكاليف للمشغلين (Gulfnet, Qualitynet, KEMS, Fasttelco) مباشرة عن طريق الإنترنت،
- يعتبر برنامج علم نت نقله هائله في تطبيقات الحاسب الآلي، حيث ومن خلال إستخدام البرنامج سوف يستطيع المشتركين التواصل عن طريق شبكات الإنترنت، حيث يؤدي ذلك إلى تحسين قدرة الحصول على المعرفة والمعلومات وإلغاء الفجوة بين الدول النامية والدول المتقدمة، ويتيح لجميع المجتمعات علي مختلف فئاتها إستخدام الإنترنت لكونه شبكة تعليمية وثقافية وإعلامية موجودة لخدمة المجتمع.
كم سنه إستغرق العمل على برنامج (علم نت) ؟
علم نت هو حصيلة جهود كبيرة وفكرة تم بلورتها من قبل أحد مؤسسي شركة خدمات التواصل السيد / هشام عبد الرحيم أكبر، وإستغرق العمل في هذا المشروع العالمي 4 سنوات تم خلالها إيجاد البرامج اللازمة لهذا المشروع ووضع التعديلات وعمل الجدوى الإقتصادية له.
ماهي التكاليف ؟
تم إنفاق مايفوق 4 ملايين دينار كويتي على هذا المشروع، والذي يعتبر نقله نوعيه وفكرة مبتكرة لتوفير خدمات الإنترنت دون مقابل.
هل سيكون علم نت محلياً ؟
تم إطلاق علم نت محلياً حتى تكون الكويت مصدر هذه الإنطلاقه، وسيتم إطلاقه عالمياً قريباً.
من قام بدعم هذا المشروع ؟
يعتبر علم نت هو تجسيد لتوجيهات حضرة صاحب السمو أمير البلاد / الشيخ صباح الأحمد الجابر الصباح بحديثه عن أهمية التعليم والثقافة، ومن هذا المنطلق يمكن وصف علم نت بالشجرة التي سوف تغذي العالم بخدمات إنترنت جديدة تساهم في نشر الثقافة والإعلام والتعليم وزيادة الوعي والتواصل بين فئات العالم كافة وقد حظينا بعد فضل المولى عز وجل بدعم كامل من مساهمي شركة التواصل القابضة لهذا المشروع.

Its almost similar to blogs advertising, sponsors will pay for monthly banner rental and I guess prices will be high for advertising.
well if they give free internet I will totally enable their banners and will even click on them
Those who say they can disable banners are completely selfish, because if the companies’ banners are not clicked or viewed then there will be no point for them to advertise and they will stop paying, then there will be no money and the project will fail.

I think it’s as Sara said I believe, most people will easily get annoyed from the ads and block them one way or another.
For his ambition to work, there needs to be largest number of subscribers, so that he can charge more value on ads. Let’s say a DSL subscriber pays 7 KD/month for his internet, and now he’s using ELM Net. Corporate prices are much higher, so I would assume ELM Net is paying much higher rate per month for the same bandwidth the user was paying 7 KD. To be profitable, they will need to get as many people as possible, with lowest cost per mb, so that they can make ads that will not only cover the cost, but make them profitable as well. This means they will put as many people as possible sharing the same 1 mb/s since they are paying for the ISPs. Also, it means excessive ads.
What I didn’t get is, is it a wireless service? or is similar to regular DSL? Do I need the phone line?
I’m also wondering, how will this work for iPhone, Android, iPad, Apple TV, Google TV and all those wireless devices?
For me, and I think for many others, having ads running all over my PC isn’t an option.
Thanks for the correction Bashar. You bring many valid points to the surface, though I never knew that corporate prices are actually higher then end user prices, which will definitely have a high impact.
Also the idea of shared bandwidth is a little concerning here, because having thousands of users can make Internet experience one hell of an experience, they said the minimum speed is 512 Kb/sec but nothing for sure.
The general concept of the ELM NET project is still unclear so I’m not sure if Ipad, Android, Google TV will be supported but they mentioned that the home DSL is their primary target. I’ll bring more details soon inshallah and share it on the blog.
Though I doubt that it’s going to work in Kuwait! I wish them good luck!
no one wants to see ads popping all over their computer screen! and admit it, most of us rarely click on banners! so it might work in other countries! but I doubt that it would work in Kuwait!
Plus! like everyone else said! there will be a shared bandwidth that would limit your download & browsing speeds! nothing’s for free is good!
Regarding the ad banners, there will be thousands of them on each side of the screen, and they represent the core revenue for the project.
Though what concerns me is like you said: the shared bandwidth which can make downloading/uploading/browsing near impossible.
Guess we should wait to see how things turn out eventually.
