shot-history-of-video-games

I wanted to share with you a brief history about video games consoles along with their common games. The first piece of tech gear that I could recall was back in early 80’s “Atari 2600” & there were some good games for it like River Raid, Pitfall & Space Invaders.

Then in mid to late 80’s came the Japanese semi-computer “Sakhr”, the name always sounded funny to me, it had good capabilities & provided useful programs plus games.201138-sakhr_ax170_2_superIn late 80’s to early 90’s came out the AMIGA from “Commodore”, it was the first to introduce games with nice graphics. Models were Amiga 500 & 500+. It used floppy disks & there were many great games such as Sensible Soccer, Lemmings, Canon Fodder, Monkey Island, Another World, Flash Back, Zool, Hostages & many others.

SEGA & NINTENDO were out almost together & they was a war between the two. Both used cartridges, SEGA most popular game & character was “Sonic” of course, as for Nintendo it was “Mario” in addition to many other games.

Yes before I forget, at the same time frame the console Neo Geo was released by Japanese game company SNK. The games looked really hot especially fighting games “King of Fighters”, but the biggest disadvantage was the very expensive games where a game can cost 30 KD-40 KD. neo-geo

A few months later came out the SEGA CD & was called the Mega CD & it was an addition to SEGA to play CD games. The SEGA was on market for several years, there were also those mini consoles the Game Boy & Game Gear. Nintendo released the Super NES later with better specs but same concept.

Philips also had their share of the consoles with their so-called CD-I, it was initially good & it also played movie CD’s, but unfortunately did not become popular.

philipscdi4502 Another console that was also not popular is the ATARI Jaguar (1993), it was a big disappointment for ATARI & not many were sold even though it was based on a 64-BIT technology. There were a few games & the graphics were not that good. Some popular games were Rayman, Aliens Vs Predators, Battle Sphere.

jaguar03 AMIGA UK, tried to compete with the others by releasing the AMIGA CD-32 console (end of 1993), it had some good titles but did not survive the competition. I think the main problem was “Poor Marketing” especially in USA, Middle East & Japan. The games were mostly the same ones found on AMIGA with some enhancements.

3do In 1996, Nintendo pumps out another system targeted at traditional gamers called Nintendo 64 or N64, the company wanted to prove that CD technology is not really needed to produce great graphics. The games I liked most were of course Donkey Kong & Mario 3D.

n64In end of 1994 SEGA released their next generation (back then) SEGA SATURN & hot titles were Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter & Tekken.

saturnSONY first came into the play when they introduced the PLAY STATION or PSX. I remember I was confused whether to buy Saturn or PS. Later PS proved to be the winner & it gained much popularity with numerous great games such as Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, Need for Speed. It has proved to be the most successful games console of all times along with Microsoft XBOX, but of course it does not beat the PC :p o_LotImg14103
