Canon IXUS 300 HS Review

camera

Finding a compact digital camera can be a hard job sometimes for many (at all times with me :) . Based on the many positive feedback I hear from many people experienced with Canon digital cameras, I decided to review one of their latest cameras Canon IXUS 300 HS.

REVIEW

Powered by 10 megapixels & designed to get better pictures in challenging low light situations – the ‘HS’ in its name stands for “High Sensitivity”. Recent Ixus models have larger resolutions of 14Mp or more, but Canon has deliberately reduced the resolution with this model in order to boost its low light performance, which is something I really want.

After all, High resolutions are only truly useful if you are enlarging your prints, or if you are digitally cropping & editing your photos. For a standard 6×4 inch photo, a resolution of 2.2Mp is all you need. Its made of stainless steel body & comes in different colors & boasts a large maximum aperture size of f2.0 (which is unusual for a compact camera) & offers a maximum ISO of 3200 at full 10Mp resolution.

The Ixus 300 HS has an optical image stabiliser built into its lens. This is designed to minimise motion blur caused by shaky hands. The camera’s lens starts from a decent wide angle of 28mm which is good for to fit in a landscape or a group photo so no need to step far back :) . Smart Flash Exposure intelligently adjusts flash for best results while Smart Shutter mode lets you trigger the shot by winking, smiling, or after an extra face enters the frame. It also features a large 3-inch LCD screen for composing your shots & viewing your pictures on. However, there’s no viewfinder :(

HD VIDEO MODE

As well as its still photo functions, the Canon Ixus 300 HS offers high definition video capture at a resolution of 720p & has an HDMI mini-port to connect directly to an HD TV.

colors

Good :)

  • Decent continuous-shooting speed
  • Slow-motion movie mode is a hoot
  • Shoots 720p movies with use of the zoom & autofocus
  • Good high-ISO picture quality

& THE BAD :(

  • Unmarked rear controller
  • Heavily reliant on menus
  • Expensive, Around 250 British pounds (120-130 KD)
